About the Natural Characteristics of Oak
Oak is a genuine hardwood, valued for its strength, beauty, and timeless character. As a natural material, no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Each board carries its own grain patterns, tones, and markings — the hallmarks of real timber rather than a manufactured surface.
You may notice knots, natural colour variations, fine cracks, or the light-and-dark “tiger stripe” effect. These aren’t imperfections but authentic features formed as the tree grew. The “tiger stripe” or “ray flecking” appears when medullary rays, fine ribbons of fibre within the grain, are revealed, especially in quarter-sawn oak. This is a prized characteristic known for its shimmer and depth.
To minimise unnecessary timber wastage and to remain aligned with our environmental sustainability standards, some components may be made using laminated solid oak sections. This is a traditional woodworking technique where multiple pieces of solid oak are joined together to form a wider, stronger, and more stable panel. It prevents large portions of the log from being discarded, reduces cost pressure, and ensures better structural performance over time, especially on larger surfaces that naturally expand or contract.
Laminated solid sections are still real timber, simply used in a more responsible and efficient way.
These natural variations and construction methods are part of genuine oak furniture and contribute to the individuality of every piece. They highlight the authenticity of the timber and ensure each product is truly one-of-a-kind.
