About the “Tiger Stripe” Effect in Oak

The light and dark “tiger stripe” patterns you see in the timber are a completely natural feature of high‑quality solid oak. They are caused by medullary rays — fine, ribbon‑like structures in the wood that run perpendicular to the growth rings.

When the oak is cut in certain ways, especially quarter‑sawn, these rays are revealed as distinctive, shimmering stripes known as ray flecking. This is a sign of genuine solid oak and is valued by furniture makers for both its beauty and its uniqueness.
