Why does the black gum feature look slightly different on some pieces?

Our Marri timber products are made using genuine Australian Marri, which is celebrated for its striking black gum vein patterns — a naturally occurring feature in the wood. However, Marri trees often produce shorter or narrower planks due to the high number of natural imperfections and voids.

To reduce unnecessary wastage and create a more sustainable product, smaller sections of timber are sometimes joined together. In doing so, we may add subtle, hand-finished black gum detail to visually blend the joins or to fill areas where natural gum veins were absent but expected for aesthetic consistency.

These faux gum accents are carefully applied by hand and follow the natural grain pattern of the timber, but because it’s a natural product and each piece is unique, some variation in appearance will occur. This technique ensures we maximise usable timber while maintaining the distinctive look customers love — and keeps our environmental footprint in check.
